LOS ANGELES, Oct 3, (Agencies): Idris Elba has openly shared that he began therapy a year ago due to his intense workaholic tendencies. The 51-year-old British actor acknowledged that while he doesn't want to reduce his workload, he recognizes certain "unhealthy habits" that he feels compelled to change.
The star of "Luther" even revealed an unusual perspective on his work-life balance, admitting that he sometimes finds working for ten consecutive days on a demanding film set to be more relaxing than spending time on the sofa with his family. Elba believes that his industry significantly rewards him for being a workaholic.
During a conversation on the Changes podcast, Idris, who boasts a diverse career as an award-winning film director, rapper, DJ, producer, and entrepreneur, shared, "I've been in therapy for about a year now. It's a lot."
In therapy, Elba has delved into the concept of change, even at the neurological level. He clarified that it's not because he dislikes himself but because he recognizes some deeply ingrained unhealthy habits. These habits have thrived in an industry that encourages and rewards extreme dedication, which has led him to be a self-described workaholic.
He elaborated, "I'm an absolute workaholic, and that isn't great for life generally. Nothing that's too extreme is good; everything needs balance. But I'm rewarded massively to be a workaholic compared to someone who says, 'I'm not going to see my family for six months.' I'm in there grinding and creating a new family. Those are pathways that I had to be like, 'I've got to adjust.' So I've been thinking about this a lot, and oddly enough, a lot of our childhood is really at the root of it."
When asked if he wanted to work less, Elba responded with a resounding, "Work less? Come on."
