LONDON, Dec 26: Renowned actor Richard Franklin, celebrated for his memorable roles in ‘Doctor Who’ and ‘Emmerdale,’ has passed away at the age of 87. The announcement of his demise was conveyed by his close friend Liam Rudden through social media, as reported by Deadline.

In a heartfelt post, Rudden shared, “It is with great sadness that the family of Richard Franklin have asked me to share news of his passing, early this morning. Richard passed away peacefully in his sleep. Details of funeral arrangements will be shared here when announced. Sleep well Richard.”

Richard Franklin gained prominence with his breakthrough television role as Joe Townsend in the British soap opera Crossroads, making his debut in 1969. Two years later, he entered the iconic world of ‘Doctor Who’ as UNIT Captain Mike Yates in the episode “Terror of the Autons,” alongside Jon Pertwee’s portrayal of the Third Doctor. After his appearance in “Planet of the Spiders,” Franklin continued to portray Mike Yates in various specials, spinoffs, audio plays, and even in the novel he penned, titled “The Killing Stone,” where his character took center stage.

Beyond his notable roles in ‘Doctor Who,’ Franklin showcased his acting prowess in productions such as ‘Little Women,’ ‘The Pathfinders,’ ‘The Borgias,’ and ‘Heartbeat.’ Notably, he extended his talents beyond acting, contributing as a writer, journalist, and political activist throughout his career. Richard Franklin leaves behind a legacy marked by his multifaceted contributions to the world of entertainment.
