IAEA approves Kuwait's lab as a regional center for environmental monitoring
IAEA names Kuwaiti lab as regional hub for radiation monitoring.

VIENNA, Sept 17: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has accredited the Radiation Measurements Laboratory (RML) of the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) as a regional center for environmental radiation monitoring under the ARASIA program for Arab countries in Western Asia.

KISR Director General Dr. Faisal Al-Humaidan announced the accreditation during his participation in the 69th IAEA Annual Conference, stating that this recognition reflects the laboratory’s advanced technical capabilities, adoption of high-quality systems, and its strong track record of regional cooperation through IAEA-led environmental radiological monitoring initiatives.

Dr. Al-Humaidan said the laboratory will play a key role in enhancing regional capacities for environmental radioactivity monitoring, unifying sampling and measurement methodologies, and facilitating data exchange to protect both the environment and public health in Kuwait and across the region.

He noted that the RML is also instrumental in responding to radiological and nuclear incidents by collecting and analyzing environmental samples with high precision. The data produced supports decision-makers in crisis management in accordance with international standards.

The laboratory issues periodic reports confirming the safety of Kuwait’s environment from radioactive contamination by monitoring radiation levels in air, water, and food, he added.

Highlighting its advanced infrastructure, Dr. Al-Humaidan stated that the laboratory is among the most sophisticated in the region, equipped with state-of-the-art instruments for measuring gamma, alpha, and beta radiation. It also includes advanced systems for monitoring radon gas in air, water, and soil, along with specialized facilities for preparing environmental samples according to the highest technical standards.

He explained that the laboratory operates under a quality management system compliant with ISO/IEC 17025, ensuring accuracy and reliability of results. It also participates regularly in the IAEA’s annual Almera International Comparison Program, which reinforces the credibility of its data and confirms its status as an accredited scientific reference in the region.

According to Dr. Al-Humaidan, the laboratory will extend technical support, training, and capacity-building services to ARASIA member countries, contributing to bridging knowledge gaps, fostering regional cooperation, and supporting sustainable development in environmental protection.

He expressed appreciation for the efforts of former National Liaison Officer Dr. Nader Al-Awadhi, current Liaison Officer Dr. Habiba Al-Munaie, and the laboratory team in achieving this milestone.

Dr. Al-Humaidan also thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, particularly the Department of International Organizations, the Permanent Representative of the State of Kuwait to Vienna, Ambassador Talal Al-Fassam, and members of the diplomatic corps for their role in advancing cooperation with the IAEA.

He concluded by affirming that the State of Kuwait, through this scientific achievement, aims to serve its national interests and strengthen its regional standing under the leadership of His Highness the Amir of the country, His Highness the Crown Prince, and His Highness the Prime Minister.
