Houthis Say Four Members Killed as Fighting Escalates Across Yemen

ADEN, Aug 16: Yemen’s Houthi group said Sunday that four of its members were killed as fighting with government forces intensifies in several parts of the war-torn country.

The group’s Al-Masirah television reported that funeral ceremonies were held for three Houthi officers in the northwestern province of Hajjah and another member in Ibb province, south of the capital Sanaa.

The Houthis did not provide details on how or where the four members were killed.

The reported deaths come days after the government-run Saba news agency said the Houthis had buried 57 members killed over a 10-day period.

Yemen has experienced a relative lull in fighting since April 2022, despite a conflict that began nearly 12 years ago when the Houthis seized control of Sanaa and expanded their influence across large parts of the country.

However, clashes have intensified in recent weeks in several provinces, including Marib, Al-Jawf, Al-Dhalea and Taiz, raising concerns over a renewed escalation.

The renewed fighting comes as Yemen continues to grapple with one of the world’s worst humanitarian and economic crises, with millions of people dependent on humanitarian assistance.
