ADEN, Aug 16: The Houthi group launched a new wave of missile and drone attacks targeting the southwestern Yemeni city of Mocha and residential areas in Marib, as fighting intensifies in several parts of the war-torn country, pro-government forces and local authorities said Sunday.
The National Resistance Forces, aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognized government and led by Presidential Leadership Council member Tariq Saleh, said a Houthi missile struck Mocha. The group did not immediately provide details on casualties or damage.
In Marib, the provincial government’s media office said six ballistic missiles and four drones targeted residential neighborhoods in the city on Saturday evening, injuring four people and damaging homes and civilian property.
One missile struck a bakery in the Al-Sharika neighborhood north of Marib city, wounding one person, according to the statement. Other strikes hit several densely populated neighborhoods, damaging vehicles and residential buildings.
The media office urged the international community to condemn attacks targeting displacement camps, residential areas and civilian facilities, and called for the incidents to be documented as alleged violations of international humanitarian law.
The Houthis have not issued an immediate comment on the reported attacks.
Mocha and Marib have faced repeated Houthi attacks in recent days amid a broader escalation across Yemen, where fighting has intensified in several provinces.
Yemen had experienced a relative lull since April 2022 after nearly eight years of intensified fighting in a conflict that began in 2014, when the Houthis seized control of the capital, Sanaa, and expanded their control over large parts of the country.
Clashes have resumed in recent weeks in areas including Marib, Al-Jawf, Al-Dhalea and Taiz, further threatening efforts to stabilize the country as Yemen continues to grapple with a severe humanitarian and economic crisis.
