FLORIDA, Nov 2: All nine people aboard a private Learjet 60 were killed after the aircraft crashed in a residential area of Palm Beach County, Florida, while flying from Texas to the Bahamas, officials said.
The aircraft had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and was en route to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas when it crashed shortly before 1 p.m. on Sunday near a mobile home community in the Cresthaven area.
The impact triggered a massive fireball and left a large crater near a roadway. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the crash as “cataclysmic,” saying the aircraft appeared to come down “like a missile.” Reuters
Authorities said all nine people aboard the Learjet were killed. There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries among people on the ground, although around 600 residents from the nearby mobile home community were evacuated as emergency crews secured the area. Reuters
Air traffic control communications reportedly indicated that the crew had encountered icing, turbulence and precipitation before declaring an emergency and reporting a rapid loss of altitude. The exact cause of the crash has not been determined. Reuters
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation, while the Federal Aviation Administration is also involved. The identities of those killed had not been released.
Note: The claim that the jet was worth $2 million has not been confirmed in the official information reviewed, and reports that it demolished a mobile home should also be treated cautiously. Current official reporting indicates the aircraft crashed near the mobile home community and created a large crater, with no confirmed casualties on the ground.
