MANILA, Aug 18: At least four people were killed and nine others injured in a shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga High School in Zamboanga City in the southern Philippines early Tuesday, according to local media reports.
The shooting occurred shortly before classes were scheduled to begin, police said. The National Bureau of Investigation confirmed that two students and two security guards were killed, while nine others sustained injuries. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
Authorities identified the alleged shooter as a male fourth-year high school student at the Jesuit-run private school. Investigators said he reportedly brought a pistol and a rifle onto the campus before opening fire inside a classroom without apparent provocation.
Zamboanga City Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso confirmed that both the alleged shooter and the victim were students at the school. The suspect's father reportedly works at the Zamboanga City Customs Office.
Video footage from the scene showed students fleeing a school building as gunfire was heard. Police and investigators have remained at the campus as they work to establish the motive behind the attack and determine whether there were any security lapses.
Authorities have not yet provided further details about the condition of those injured or whether additional arrests have been made.
