DUBAI, Sep 21: Vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz fell sharply over the weekend, with only 12 commodity vessels making the passage, down from 35 the previous weekend, according to Kpler data tracking ships through transponder and satellite signals.
Visible shipping activity through the strategic waterway has dwindled to a trickle, although Middle Eastern oil producers continue to export crude aboard tankers operating with their transponders switched off, Reuters reported.
Kpler data showed that four trackable vessels exited the strait on Sunday, including two tankers carrying refined oil products, while two small oil tankers entered the Persian Gulf.
On Saturday, five vessels carrying agricultural products, liquefied petroleum gas and fertilizer left the Persian Gulf, while an empty very large gas carrier entered the waterway.
Before the US-Israeli war with Iran began on February 28, the Strait of Hormuz typically handled about 125 large commercial vessels a day, according to Reuters.
The sharp decline in visible traffic highlights the disruption to one of the world's most important maritime energy routes amid the ongoing regional conflict.
