Municipal Council approves shaded, air-conditioned walkways for historic Mubarakiya market.

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 29: In a significant move to restore and enhance one of Kuwait’s iconic heritage sites, the Municipal Council on Monday approved the inclusion of shaded and air-conditioned walkways as part of the reconstruction project for the area affected by the Mubarakiya fire in Qibla.

The decision was made during the Council’s main session, chaired by Council President Abdullah Al-Mahri, and reflects a broader vision to modernize while preserving the historical charm of the Mubarakiya area—one of Kuwait’s most beloved traditional markets.

Deputy Director General of the Projects Sector at Kuwait Municipality, Eng. Maisa Boushehri commented on the sidelines of the session, describing the initiative as a “noble wish” that has already been set in motion. "We have directed the project's specialized consultants to provide shading and air conditioning for the walkways in the area under development," she stated.

Boushehri added that the implementation mechanism involves installing electronically operated glass windows to allow for climate control, and confirmed that construction has already begun and will proceed until completion.

Alongside this decision, the Municipal Council approved several key proposals across various government sectors. These include:

  • Ministry of Finance Request: Approval to amend the Council’s previous decision regarding the Omariya Zoo site, transferring it to state property instead of public treasury funds, in order to help cover the actuarial deficit of the Public Institution for Social Security.
  • Ministry of Defense Request: Approval to amend a prior decision regarding two land forces sites located in the southern region.
  • Ministry of Public Works Request: Approval to cancel the site designation for a pumping station previously allocated to the Ministry.
  • Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy Request: Approval to allocate a new site for a transformer station in the Al-Nuzha area.
  • Urban Development in Qibla: Approval of a proposal for the redevelopment and reorganization of various plots within the Qibla area in Kuwait City.

However, not all proposals were met with approval. The Council:

  • Rejected a proposal to allow café licenses to be added to existing restaurant licenses in plots located in investment-use areas, citing the municipality’s lack of endorsement.
  • Rejected a request from the Public Authority for Industry to amend the decision of the committee tasked with exercising Municipal Council powers regarding boundary changes and area expansions for the Subhan sanitary and industrial water treatment plant site.

These decisions underscore the Council’s ongoing efforts to balance modernization, infrastructure development, and regulatory integrity across Kuwait’s urban and economic sectors.
