KUWAIT CITY, Oct 2: A recent study suggests that women who have had multiple children may have a lower likelihood of developing dementia, reports Al-Rai daily.

The study reveals that higher exposure to estrogen over a woman's lifetime can contribute to a healthier brain. Women with a "longer reproductive lifespan," such as those who have had multiple children, tend to have increased exposure to this hormone.

The research indicates that this heightened exposure to estrogen is associated with a reduced risk of cerebrovascular disease, a condition linked to cognitive impairment and dementia.

A previous study from 2021 also found that women with higher estrogen exposure had increased gray matter in their brains. Gray matter is a crucial component of the nervous system, playing a role in sensory perception, memory, decision-making, and more.

Researchers from Weill Cornell Medical College in New York discovered that for each additional year a woman is exposed to estrogen during her life, the average volume of gray matter in specific brain areas increases by 1 percent. Furthermore, with each additional child a woman gives birth to, the volume of gray matter increases by 2 percent.
