Oman cabinet touts compelling soccer event

KUWAIT CITY, Jan 7, (KUNA): His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah was commended Sunday by two Kuwaiti officials who congratulated him on the resounding success of the recently concluded 23rd edition of the Arabian Gulf Cup. His Highness the Amir was the recipient of letters of thanks penned by His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah and His Highness Sheikh Nasser Al- Mohammad Al-Sabah over the wellorganized football tournament. Meanwhile, His Highness the Amir reciprocated the well-wishes in letters he sent to the pair of officials, saying that the Kuwait-hosted Arabian Gulf Cup bedazzled spectators and proved that the county has risen to international prominence.

Meanwhile, the Omani cabinet Sunday spoke highly of the State of Kuwait for organizing the recent 23rd version of the Arabian Gulf Cup in an eyecatching and arresting fashion over a couple of weeks. The cabinet said in a statement carried by Oman’s state news agency ONA that the impressive way pursued by Kuwait in gearing up for, and organizing, the Gulf football championship was principally the cause of the successful event. It, further, voiced much thanks and appreciation to Kuwait for properly taking care of Omani fans who were injured in a stampede following the Oman-UAE final.

Oman on Friday beat the UAE in a penalty shoot-out after a nil-nil draw, securing its second Arabian Gulf cup. Following the final game, Omani fans were caught in a rush due to a glass barrier collapse at the peopled Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium, leaving at least 30 people injured. Furthermore, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al- Sabah will patronize and attend on Monday the inauguration of the 11th Meeting of Chairpersons and Speakers of Shura, Representatives Councils and National Assemblies of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The opening ceremony will be held in the Sheraton Kuwait Hotel at 10:30 am.

Kuwait’s Ambassador to Oman Fahad Al-Mutairi said on Saturday that the Gulf tournament showed how sports could be effective in reinforcing the Gulf solidarity. Al-Mutairi was remarking to KUNA after wrap-up of the 23rd Arabian Gulf Cup tournament, in which all of the Gulf States participated in, along with Iraq and Yemen. He stressed that the tournament showed that it could help in bringing harmony and boosting cooperation among the Gulf States. He added that the Gulf 23 cup, which was held in Kuwait, was a success on all levels. The Kuwaiti ambassador congratulated the Omani team on winning the Gulf 23 title for the second time in history.
