LOS ANGELES, Jan 25: Pop star Harry Styles has revealed the story behind his unexpected presence at Vatican City last year, when Pope Leo XIV was announced as the new leader of the Catholic Church.
In an interview with BBC Radio 1 released Jan. 22, Styles, 31, said he was in Rome for a haircut when he heard crowds shouting, “Habemus papam, habemus papam,” signaling the election of the new pope.
“I was getting a haircut in Rome, and I heard all these people start shouting… and people running down the street,” Styles recalled. After finishing the trim, he decided to walk to St. Peter’s Square to witness the historic moment firsthand. “I was like, ‘I’m a five-minute walk from there,’ so I walked over. It was wild,” he said.
Styles, who recently returned to music with his new single “Aperture,” described the experience as unusual, joking that he wasn’t accustomed to being a spectator in such a scenario. “I was like, ‘Who is this getting all this attention?’” he added.
The One Direction alum was spotted among the crowd dressed casually in a blue jacket, black shades, and a dark hat reading “Techno is My Boyfriend.” His presence quickly went viral on social media, with fans joking about the singer’s unpredictable whereabouts.
“Harry Styles is so random,” one X (formerly Twitter) user wrote. “One day he’s at the Grammys winning Album of the Year, then he’s running a marathon in Japan, but he could also be in Rome waiting for the announcement of the new pope.” Another account humorously dubbed him a “Pope Crave correspondent.”
Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, made his first public appearance following his election as successor to the late Pope Francis in May, marking a historic moment for the Vatican.
