LOS ANGELES, Aug 3: Harrison Ford is set to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in the highly anticipated film Captain America: Brave New World, scheduled for release next year.
At the San Diego Comic-Con, Ford, 82, spoke about his experience stepping into the MCU, where he portrays the US president who evolves into the Red Hulk. Discussing the challenges of motion capture technology, crucial for depicting transformations in Hulk movies, Ford candidly shared his approach to the role.
“It took not caring,” Ford told Variety. “It took being an idiot for money, which I’ve done before.” He clarified that his comments were not meant to criticize the film, emphasizing that he enjoyed the experience despite the unique demands of the role. “I’m just saying you have to do certain things that normally your mother would not want you to do — or your acting coach, if you had one,” Ford added.
Ford expressed his delight at the positive reception of the film’s trailer, which premiered at the convention. His portrayal of Ross succeeds that of the late William Hurt, who played the character in five MCU films from 2008 to 2021. Ford was cast following Hurt’s death in 2022 due to prostate cancer at age 71.
Anthony Mackie, Ford’s co-star in Captain America 4, praised the veteran actor in a June 2023 interview with Inverse. Mackie lauded Ford’s presence, noting, “He’s Harrison f—ing Ford,” and highlighted Ford’s down-to-earth nature and charisma. “He dispels that [aura] really quickly because he’s such a cool guy,” Mackie added.
In a conversation with ScreenRant at Comic-Con, Ford compared his MCU role to his iconic performances in the Indiana Jones and Star Wars franchises. He appreciated the creative freedom offered by the MCU, saying, “It’s a whole different cut of cloth, isn’t it? Free of some normal constraints to the imagination. It’s delightful to deal with and it’s fun.”
Ford also commended his co-stars and the film’s director, Julius Onah. “The people I worked with were fantastic,” Ford said, praising Onah’s direction and Mackie’s collaboration. “We had a good time. I enjoyed it.”
