Guide children for proper use of Internet; Gulf family values, impact on future generations

RIYADH, Oct 4: The Gulf Family Forum concluded recently its activities during which it discussed six axes that dealt with the most important issues and topics of importance and priority for the Gulf family, with the participation of Kuwaitis and local and international speakers.

The forum sessions, organized by the Saudi Family Affairs Council in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, dealt with a number of issues and topics of importance and priority for the family, opportunities, challenges and Gulf family values and their impact on preparing a more effective generation to meet future challenges, presented by 26 speakers. For her part, Head of Information Systems and Technology Department at the Supreme Council for Kuwaiti Family Affairs, Eng. Fawzia Al-Masaeed, in her participation entitled ‘The Impact of Virtual Reality Technology and Augmented Reality on Family Cohesion in the Gulf’ in one of the forum sessions, indicated that the family has a responsibility within digital technology to improve guiding children to safe use of the Internet, follow-up and educate them and instruct them for the proper use of electronic devices.

Al-Masaeed pointed out the importance of activating real talents and employing them in the use of technology, promoting the principle of Islamic culture and the national aspect, and using and developing these talents. She stressed that the problem lies in the absence of supervision over children’s use of electronic devices and work to draw their attention to using them in a useful manner by specifying specific tasks and activities for them and working to accompany this activity outside the scope of electronic means to limit their use.

Al-Masaeed indicated the importance of the family’s control over the websites and games the children see, setting times for using the devices and trying to fill the children’s free time with meaningful things. For his part, the Head of the Mobile Service Department for the Elderly in the Capital in the Department of Elderly Care at the Kuwaiti Ministry of Social Affairs, Ghunaim Al-Majidi, reviewed in his participation in one of the forum sessions the experience of the State of Kuwait in enacting policies and legislation for the elderly, stressing that Kuwait is a forerunner in enacting laws to serve the elderly, as it has harnessed all possibilities to achieve the highest standards of well-being for the elderly.

Al-Majidi stressed the keenness of the Ministry of Affairs on the principle of caring for the elderly to achieve the maximum levels of empowerment, rights and participation with society, indicating that there are a number of development projects for the elderly, including the project of mobile medical teams for the elderly in their homes, the project of physiotherapy clinics in the mobile service departments, and the training, development project for technical cadres, and the administration working with the elderly, as well as the elderly diwaniya project and the information bank project.

He explained that the services provided to the elderly always enjoy development, including the issuance of a priority card, the issuance of traffic plates, the opening of the Al-Baraka Club and the launch of a priority application, and in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the services have turned into fully digital, including remote medical committees, and in 2022, the launch of data bank for the elderly and the opening of a new physiotherapy ward. He added that there are a number of facilities and buildings that serve the elderly, including the Farah Specialized Center for the Care and Rehabilitation of the Elderly, mobile service centers for the elderly, physiotherapy clinics, clubs for the elderly, as well as the offices of the elderly.

Al-Majidi stressed that the reality of the elderly needs to provide them with all their needs and work to achieve this by working on the two sides of legislating laws and paying attention to providing and improving services for them. The forum sessions, which was held under the auspices of the Minister of Human Resources and Social Development and Chairman of the Saudi Family Affairs Council, Eng. Ahmad Al-Rajhi, included a session entitled ‘Family Values in the Gulf and their Impact on Preparing a Generation that Keeps Up with Change’ and the second session entitled ‘The Impact of Virtual Reality Technology and Augmented Reality on Family Cohesion in the Gulf’ and the third entitled ‘Family Economics and its Impact on Strengthening Family Cohesion’.

While the sessions of the second day dealt with the ‘Best practices and policies to support childhood in the Gulf countries’, a session entitled ‘The Reality of the Elderly in the Light of Changes’, and the last session entitled ‘Family Health in the Gulf ‘. It is noteworthy that the celebration of Gulf Family Day comes in implementation of the decisions of the seventh meeting of the Committee of Ministers of Social Affairs in the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, held on September 21, 2021, which included the approval of the adoption of September 14 as the Gulf Family Day.
