WASHINGTON, May 4: Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has called on President Donald Trump to launch what he described as a “big, strong, painful and short” military response against Iran, following reported attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and missile and drone strikes on the United Arab Emirates.

Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, Graham said Iran had “absolutely” violated its ceasefire with the United States, arguing that the incidents justify a forceful strike to reduce Iran’s military capabilities and protect freedom of navigation in the region. He added that the actions were “inconsistent with a regime that wants a diplomatic solution.”

Meanwhile, President Trump stopped short of confirming a ceasefire breach, telling ABC News that recent exchanges did not amount to heavy fighting. “It was not heavy firing,” he said, adding that the situation was being assessed. “Ships are moving… I’m looking into it.”

Trump’s remarks come amid rising tensions in the Gulf, where reports of maritime attacks and air defence engagements have heightened concerns over the stability of the fragile truce between Washington and Tehran.
