WASHINGTON, Nov 8: Google announced that it will soon introduce new “purchase and pass” personalization settings in its Google Wallet app, allowing users to receive more tailored recommendations, offers, and ads based on their transaction and pass history.
According to the tech giant, the upcoming update will enable Google to use users’ purchase data — such as Google Pay transactions — and stored passes, including loyalty cards, event tickets, and boarding passes, to enhance personalization across its first-party services.
The feature aims to improve the user experience by providing more relevant suggestions. For example, the system could identify a traveler’s preferred airline from a stored boarding pass or recommend related services, such as a running app, after detecting an event pass for a marathon.
Google emphasized that people “expect online experiences to be tailored” but assured users that privacy controls remain central to the update. The company confirmed that the use of purchase and pass data can be completely disabled at any time.
For those who enable the feature, granular settings will allow users to choose whether their data is used for in-app personalization, ad personalization, and ad measurement.
At a broader level, Google clarified that it will not sell, purchase, or pass information to third-party companies, and sensitive data will not be used for ad targeting.
The new personalization settings will begin rolling out to users in the United States over the coming months. Once available, users will receive an in-app notification within Google Wallet, and additional details will be published in an accompanying support document.
