Google Maps on iPhone now scans screenshots to save locations
iPhone users can now save places directly from screenshots in Google Maps.

NEW YORK, May 8: Google Maps has launched a new feature that scans screenshots on your iPhone and automatically saves any locations it detects. First announced in March, this Gemini-powered functionality aims to simplify the process of saving places found through screenshots, such as locations shared on social media or websites.

Instead of manually recalling names, returning to your gallery, and searching for the location on Maps, the feature allows Google Maps to automatically recognize and save places from your screenshots. To use it, make sure your Google Maps app is updated to the latest version, then navigate to the "You" tab, where you will find a new private list titled “Screenshots.” A demo tutorial will walk you through how it works.

When you take a screenshot that contains location details—such as names or addresses — Google Maps will automatically detect the information and display the corresponding Maps listing. A review interface will allow you to either save or discard the location. Saved locations will appear in your Screenshots list, and you can move them to other collections as needed.

The feature also includes an "auto-scan" option, which, if you choose to “Allow Access to All Photos,” will automatically detect screenshots with location details and place them in a carousel for review. Alternatively, you can browse through your gallery and manually import images for scanning. You can toggle the "auto-scan" feature on or off using a button located below the screenshots carousel.

Currently, this feature is available for Google Maps on iOS (US English), with plans for an Android release in the future.
