German Chancellor Friedrich Merz

BERLIN, Apr 27: Friedrich Merz, Chancellor of Germany, sharply criticized the leadership in Iran, accusing it and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of “humiliating” the Iranian people amid ongoing regional tensions.

Speaking to students in Marsberg, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Merz said the Iranian leadership, particularly the Revolutionary Guards, was responsible for undermining the nation. He added, however, that Iranian officials had negotiated with the United States “very skillfully,” appearing stronger than previously assessed.

Merz also raised concerns over security in the Strait of Hormuz, saying it had been partially mined, and questioned Washington’s strategy in the ongoing conflict.

In separate remarks over the weekend following an informal EU summit in Cyprus, Merz described the war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran as “totally unnecessary,” warning that its geopolitical fallout is impacting energy markets across Europe, Asia, and the United States.

His comments reflect growing concern among European leaders over the widening economic and security consequences of the conflict.
