BERLIN: Germany’s national rail operator, Deutsche Bahn, has banned alcohol consumption at its train stations in a move aimed at improving passenger safety and cleanliness.

The new rule, introduced Thursday under the company’s station regulations, applies to public areas under Deutsche Bahn’s control, including platforms.

However, restaurants operating within stations are exempt from the ban. Passengers may also continue to carry sealed alcoholic drinks in their bags, while alcohol consumption remains generally permitted on trains.

Security personnel will enforce the restriction through regular patrols. Passengers who violate the rule may be ordered to leave the station area immediately, while repeat offenders could face longer bans from station premises.

Deutsche Bahn said the measure responds to suggestions from passengers, employees and other stakeholders who want safer and cleaner railway stations.

A recent representative survey commissioned by the company found that 79 percent of respondents supported the ban, while only 9 percent opposed it.

The initiative is part of efforts to improve the station environment and address concerns about passenger safety and cleanliness across Germany’s railway network.
