KUWAIT CITY, Oct 29: The 17th meeting of the Permanent Committee for Meteorology and Climate of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) marked a key step in advancing joint plans and initiatives among member states, officials said Wednesday.
Acting Director General of the Public Authority for Civil Aviation, Duaij Al-Otaibi, chaired the session in Kuwait and described the meeting as a demonstration of “serious joint Gulf action and fruitful cooperation” in meteorology and climate.
Al-Otaibi highlighted the establishment of an advanced early warning network for weather and climate disasters across GCC countries, aimed at improving regional preparedness to protect lives and property. He stressed that meteorology and climate are integral to sustainable development and praised GCC leaders for their continued support, noting that the adoption of a unified meteorology law further strengthens regional cooperation in facing climate challenges.
“The meeting reflects the commitment of GCC countries to implementing initiatives that protect citizens and support sustainable development,” Al-Otaibi said. He also thanked the GCC General Secretariat for its ongoing support in reinforcing joint Gulf action.
Abdullah Al-Rubaie, Head of the Human and Environmental Affairs Sector at the GCC General Secretariat, emphasized the importance of unified Gulf positions in regional and international forums. He said the gathering underlines the need for coordinated action to enhance GCC influence in global climate efforts.
Al-Rubaie noted that the meeting agenda includes key topics such as the Gulf climate statistics project and progress on the Green Middle East Initiative, along with other initiatives aimed at strengthening meteorology and climate collaboration across member states.
