Gautam Adani Bribery Case: US Judge Refuses Immediate Dismissal

NEW YORK, June 27: A US federal judge on Friday declined to immediately dismiss criminal charges against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, ordering the Justice Department to explain its decision to abandon the prosecution.

The ruling came after Adani’s legal team requested the formal dismissal of the case earlier this week, following the Justice Department’s decision last month to stop pursuing the charges.

Brooklyn-based US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis said the court needed further justification from prosecutors before taking action on the dismissal request.

Adani and several associates were charged in 2024 with paying bribes to Indian government officials to secure approval for a solar power project involving an Adani Group subsidiary. Prosecutors also accused the defendants of misleading US investors by providing assurances about the company’s anti-corruption practices.

The Adani Group has repeatedly denied the allegations, saying there was no wrongdoing and that the charges were without merit.

Adani’s lawyers on Wednesday, June 24, asked Judge Garaufis to formally close the case after the Justice Department informed the court that it would no longer pursue the prosecution.

The judge’s decision means the case will remain pending while the Justice Department provides its explanation for abandoning the criminal proceedings.

The development adds another legal chapter to a high-profile case that had drawn international attention because of Adani’s position as one of India’s most prominent business figures and the global reach of the Adani Group.
