Fuel Shock in Pakistan as Petrol Hits Rs458 Per Litre, Diesel Rs520

ISLAMABAD, Apr 2: Pakistan’s government on Thursday announced a sharp increase in petroleum product prices, raising petrol to Rs458.40 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) to Rs520.35 per litre.

The announcement was made at a press conference by Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik alongside Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. The latest revision represents a significant jump compared to early March rates, with petrol increasing by over Rs137 per litre and diesel by more than Rs184 per litre.

Finance Minister Aurangzeb also announced a targeted relief measure for consumers, stating that motorcycle users will receive subsidised petrol at Rs100 less per litre for up to 20 litres.

The hike comes after a series of rejected proposals in recent weeks, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif previously declining recommendations to raise fuel prices, stating that the government would absorb the financial burden instead of passing it on to the public.

This marks the second revision in petroleum prices in less than a month, following an earlier increase on March 6 amid rising global oil prices linked to geopolitical tensions in the region.
