From vows to verdicts: Over 2,600 Kuwaiti couples divorce in 2025
New Justice Ministry data reveals patterns in Kuwaiti marriage and divorce.

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 24: Newly released statistics from the Ministry of Justice have revealed that 222 divorce cases involving Kuwaiti spouses occurred between January 1 and July 31, 2025, shedding light on the evolving family dynamics in the country.

The data further indicated that 287 Kuwaiti women divorced before consummation of marriage during the same period — a figure that surpasses divorces after cohabitation.

In addition, the statistics recorded 439 divorce cases involving Kuwaiti husbands who divorced a wife while still maintaining marriage to one or more other wives.

Despite these figures, marriage rates among Kuwaitis remain strong. The total number of marriages between Kuwaiti nationals during the same seven-month period reached 5,993, with over 75% of all recorded marriages involving both spouses being Kuwaiti citizens.

The report also noted a total of 2,666 divorces in 2025 among Kuwaiti couples who had married in previous years — highlighting that many of the dissolutions stemmed from longer-term marriages, not just recent unions.

A responsible source at the Ministry of Justice said that the ministry has recently adopted a new and improved mechanism to strengthen the role of marital reconciliation centers, aiming to reduce the rising divorce rate and curb family disintegration.

The source noted that these centers are staffed by sociologists, family counselors, and religious scholars, who work directly with couples to mediate disputes and offer guidance before marital issues escalate into divorce.

The ministry has also emphasized inter-agency cooperation to raise awareness among newly married couples on critical social issues — particularly the dangers of drug abuse on families and the negative consequences of divorce on individuals and society at large.

The effort reflects Kuwait’s broader initiative to preserve family cohesion and address the social and psychological factors that contribute to the rising trend of divorce.
