DUBAI, Jan 10: A 38-year-old Ukrainian homemaker, who recently underwent the inaugural liver transplant at King’s College Hospital in Dubai, has expressed profound gratitude towards her anonymous donor. Nadiia Musiuk, the recipient of the life-changing transplant, hailed the unknown individual as her hero, acknowledging their role in giving her a renewed chance at life.
Reflecting on the pivotal moment, Nadiia conveyed, “I don’t know who they are, but they are my heroes. I am thankful beyond words.” Her sentiments extended to heartfelt prayers for the donor's family, underscoring the deep appreciation she holds for the individuals responsible for the life-altering gift.
Nadiia's health journey commenced in May 2023 when she began experiencing health complications, including digestive issues and swollen feet. Initially, consulting a gastroenterologist yielded no alarming findings, with dietary changes being the recommended course of action. Unconvinced, Nadiia persisted, sensing an underlying health concern.
Seeking a second opinion from Dr. Kaiser Raja, a consultant hepatologist at King's College Hospital London in Dubai, proved instrumental. A subsequent diagnosis revealed liver disease, prompting immediate treatment with steroids. Nadiia shared her surprise at learning about the longstanding nature of the disease, emphasizing the silent nature of liver ailments.
As her health continued to decline, Nadiia was admitted to the hospital for a two-week stay in September. Battling symptoms such as yellowing eyes, changes in skin color, and persistent swelling in her feet, she expressed reliance on the medical team, despite the ineffectiveness of prescribed medications.
A Ray of Hope Emerges The revelation of Nadiia's critical liver condition, leading to failure, was the moment when Dr. Kaiser confirmed the necessity of a liver transplant as the sole viable option. Struggling to absorb the doctor's words, Nadiia, at 38, grappled with the unexpected reality, questioning the need for a new organ and grappling with disbelief.
In a pursuit of alternatives, Nadiia, along with her medical team, explored transplant options in various countries, reaching out to hospitals globally, including Kings College Hospital in London. The prospect of conducting the surgery in Dubai while managing other medical procedures locally emerged as a viable option, revealing a glimmer of hope for Nadiia.
The turning point arrived on November 27 when Dr. Kaiser delivered the awaited news – a suitable donor had been found. Overwhelmed with emotions, Nadiia swiftly proceeded with surgery on November 29, experiencing a surge of happiness she hadn't felt in ages.
Navigating the Path to Healing Currently, undergoing regular check-ups and prescribed medication, Nadiia is on the path to recovery, profoundly thankful for the second chance at life bestowed upon her. Reflecting on her transformative journey, she underscores the significance of raising awareness about organ donation in the Middle East.
"Transplant is something new in this region. A lot of people are still not aware of organ donation. Many people need organs, but unfortunately, they are not available. Every person can take a minute and think about organ donation; it can impact many families," advocates Nadiia, expressing her dedication to becoming an organ donor herself.
Her deepest gratitude extends to the family of the anonymous donor, acknowledging their selfless act. Embracing the Islamic perspective that saving a life equates to saving humanity, Nadiia, unaware of their identity, offers regular prayers for the donor's family, hoping for their continued health and well-being.
