Freedom of Navigation “Non-Negotiable,” Says Qatar PM Amid Crisis

DOHA, May 23: Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has reaffirmed that freedom of navigation is a “fundamental and non-negotiable” principle, warning that any move to close the Strait of Hormuz or use it as a pressure tool would further escalate regional tensions and threaten the vital interests of countries in the region.

According to a statement from the Qatari Foreign Ministry, the remarks came during a telephone call between Sheikh Mohammed and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, during which both sides discussed ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring peace, security and stability in the region.

Sheikh Mohammed reiterated Qatar’s full support for initiatives seeking a comprehensive agreement to resolve the crisis, stressing the importance of constructive engagement by all parties to achieve lasting peace and de-escalation.

He also emphasized the need to adhere to international law and principles of good neighbourliness, while prioritizing regional stability and the welfare of affected populations, in order to strengthen both regional and global security.
