KUWAIT CITY, Jan 8: It is common these days to see advertisements for kidney donors, and the phenomenon is on the rise in different parts of the country, reports Al-Jarida daily. In this context, health sources disclosed that relatives or outsiders can donate kidney to patients in Kuwait and medical checkups are usually done to ensure that the donor has no health problem such as blood pressure or kidney disease if he’s a close relative.

They added a committee has been established by the ministry with membership of a psychologist, legal researcher, social worker, and doctors from different hospitals to prevent manipulation among donors, especially those the patients are not acquainted with.

The committee has instituted strict regulations for kidney donation and a donor must be earning minimum salary of KD 300. He should have resided in the country for at least three years, with the aim of preventing instances where someone else will be brought from outside for this purpose. Also, a donor is not allowed to donate to his own sponsor, and in case the committee has any doubts about a person being forced to donate or insufficient reasons are given in that regard, the process will be rejected completely.

There are difficult phases in the process of donating kidney to prevent manipulation. The phases include thorough check of the donor who’s generally required to visit a social investigator to make sure he is not donating for financial gain, after which he’ll see the concerned committee if 70 percent of the claims are turned down.

Meanwhile, Hamad Al-Essa Medical Center has an excellent reputation in the Arab world as to issues of kidney donation, as it works together with internationally acclaimed doctors specialized in this field. Sources said the center equipped with the most sophisticated machines to cope with contemporary developments in kidney transplant surgeries has obtained awards and conducted several scientific researches in this domain.

They noted the center has two departments; the first section for kidney diseases and transplant and the second section for member transplant and surgery. However, only the section for kidney transplant is currently in operation.
