PARIS, Apr 16: World leaders are set to gather in Paris for a high-level meeting focused on efforts to ensure the reopening and security of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is scheduled to travel to the French capital on Friday to attend the multinational conference, according to his office. The meeting is being co-hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The talks aim to ease tensions affecting maritime traffic through the strategic waterway, which is critical for global energy supplies and international trade.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre is expected to participate virtually, while several other leaders are assessing their mode of attendance.
The meeting comes amid heightened international concern over disruptions in the region, with governments seeking coordinated solutions to safeguard freedom of navigation and stabilize shipping flows.
