France Rules Out Lifting Iran Sanctions While Strait of Hormuz Is Blocked

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said it is “out of the question” to lift any international sanctions on Iran as long as the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked.

Speaking to French radio station RTL, Barrot said Iran — or “at least the Iranian regime” — was seeking sanctions relief from the United States in exchange for concessions on its nuclear programme.

However, he said no sanctions should be eased under the current circumstances.

“It is out of the question that any sanctions could be lifted as long as a strait like the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked,” Barrot said.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime routes for oil and gas shipments. Any disruption to traffic through the waterway can have major consequences for global energy markets and international security.

Barrot’s comments signal France’s firm position that negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme cannot be separated from broader regional security concerns.
