France Reports First Ebola Case

PARIS, Jun 24: France has confirmed its first imported case of Ebola after a humanitarian doctor returned from a mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Health Ministry announced on Wednesday.

The patient, who had been working in an area affected by the ongoing Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo, was immediately isolated and admitted to a specialized medical facility upon arrival in France. Authorities said the patient is in stable condition and that all precautionary measures were implemented to prevent any risk of transmission.

French health officials have launched a comprehensive epidemiological investigation to identify anyone who may have come into contact with the infected individual. Those identified will be contacted by regional health authorities, placed under 21 days of home isolation, and closely monitored for symptoms.

The ministry noted that France already operates a dedicated monitoring system for humanitarian and aid workers returning from outbreak zones.

The current Ebola outbreak is centered in Congo’s eastern Ituri Province and has spread to nearby regions, prompting heightened surveillance in neighboring Uganda over concerns of cross-border transmission. Health experts warn that the outbreak remains a significant regional threat due to ongoing conflict, population displacement, and fragile healthcare systems in affected areas.

The outbreak is being driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which no approved vaccine currently exists. Ebola causes severe hemorrhagic fever and spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected individuals.
