RIYADH, May 28: Former Yemeni president Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi has died in Saudi Arabia following a sudden health crisis, according to a source within the Yemeni presidency.

The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that Hadi, who was in his eighties, died in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

Hadi served as president of Yemen during one of the country's most turbulent periods and spent his final years in exile in Saudi Arabia.

He fled Yemen in 2015 after civil war erupted between the Iran-backed Houthis and forces loyal to the internationally recognized government. The conflict intensified after Houthi fighters seized the capital, Sanaa, prompting a Saudi-led military coalition to intervene in support of Hadi's government.

Hadi remained a central figure in Yemen's internationally recognized leadership for years before transferring presidential powers to a leadership council in 2022 as part of efforts to advance a political settlement to the conflict.

No immediate details were released regarding funeral arrangements. His death marks the end of a political career closely tied to Yemen's modern history and the country's prolonged conflict.
