TEHRAN (AP), Apr 2: An airstrike has reportedly severely wounded former Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharazi, according to Iranian media reports, in an incident that remains unverified by independent sources. The reports said the 81-year-old diplomat was injured in the attack on Wednesday, while his wife was killed. It was not immediately clear whether Kharazi himself was directly targeted or whether he was caught in a strike on a nearby location.
Kharazi previously served as foreign minister under reformist President Mohammad Khatami and later became a foreign policy adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In past remarks that drew international attention, Kharazi told Al Jazeera in 2022 that Iran had “the technical means to produce a nuclear bomb but there has been no decision by Iran to build one,” fueling concerns over Tehran’s nuclear intentions.
Following the outbreak of regional conflict, he told CNN that he saw “no room for diplomacy anymore,” criticizing former U.S. President Donald Trump and accusing Washington of breaking past negotiations while talks were underway.
The circumstances of the airstrike, including responsibility and intended target, remain unclear, and there has been no independent confirmation of the casualty details.
