KUWAIT CITY, Feb 8: Dr. Sami Al-Yateem, former president of Saudi Arabia’s Al-Mudhar Club, praised the state of Kuwaiti sports, highlighting the government’s active role in hosting major events across various disciplines. Recent examples include the French Super Cup at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium, the Asian Handball Championship qualifiers for the World Cup, the 4th Division Ice Hockey World Cup, and other international competitions.

In an interview with Al-Seyassah, Al-Yateem said: “The quality of these events, along with the participation of Arab, continental, and international teams, reflects Kuwait’s excellent organization, strong responsibility, and precise execution. This ensures that teams can perform at their best, raising the overall level of competition.”

He expressed hope that the Kuwaiti national football team (“Al-Azraq”) will regain its former glory, noting that a strong national team would make tournaments more competitive and engaging.

Al-Yateem also praised Kuwaiti sports media, calling it “exceptional,” consistently present at events, and professional in its coverage, effectively conveying the right image to fans, readers, and viewers.

Al-Yateem highlighted the rapid growth of sports in Saudi Arabia, under the leadership of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Minister of Sports Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal. He noted that this progress is reflected in Saudi Arabia hosting Asian championships, securing the 2034 World Cup finals, and developing new sports facilities—all contributing to the country’s long-term sports advancement.

Regarding Saudi handball, Al-Yateem noted that the national team is undergoing a healthy renewal phase, ensuring continuity across generations. “Former players gave their all; now it’s up to the current generation to represent Saudi Arabia in regional, continental, and international competitions,” he said, highlighting the support of leadership and young, ambitious sports administrators.

Al-Yateem acknowledged that the Al-Mudhar handball team is currently underperforming, which does not reflect the club’s stature. He urged the club’s management to reassess the team and restore it to its former level, seeking guidance from experienced predecessors. He also recommended seminars, workshops, and meetings to address weaknesses and reinforce strengths, aiming to bring the team back to Asian championship standards.

On the subject of foreign players, Al-Yateem said: “The number of foreign players in the league has increased. Previously, having two on the court allowed local players more opportunities. Clubs should recruit highly skilled professionals or rely on local talent. I recommend at least one season with no foreign players or only one, to avoid overburdening club budgets, and foreign goalkeepers should be avoided.”

In closing, Dr. Al-Yateem thanked the people of Kuwait and Al-Seyassah newspaper for giving him the platform to discuss Gulf sports, particularly developments in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
