KUWAIT CITY, Oct 14: The China Cultural Center in Kuwait, in cooperation with Great Wall Restaurant, hosted “The Taste of China: Jiaozi (Dumpling) Experience” on Oct13, at the center’s basement floor.
The event introduced participants to the cultural significance of Chinese dumplings through an interactive experience featuring traditional Chinese seasonings, colorful dumpling-making techniques and the preparation of dipping sauces.
Many Kuwaitis attended the event, where staff from Great Wall Restaurant demonstrated the traditional art of dumpling-making, guiding participants through every step, from rolling and shaping the dough to adding fillings and folding the dumplings.
Young and old, women and men, enthusiastically participated in the hands-on activity, experiencing Chinese culinary traditions firsthand. The event also provided an opportunity to promote cultural understanding and strengthen people-to-people ties through food.
Chinese dumplings, known as jiaozi, are among the most cherished foods in Chinese culinary culture, with a history stretching back approximately 1,800 years. According to popular legend, they originated during the Eastern Han Dynasty and are associated with the physician Zhang Zhongjing, who is said to have prepared a warming mixture of meat and medicinal herbs wrapped in dough to help people suffering from frostbite during winter.
Over the centuries, dumplings have evolved into a popular dish enjoyed around the world. They hold particular significance during Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations and family reunions. Their crescent shape resembles ancient Chinese gold and silver ingots, symbolizing wealth, prosperity and good fortune for the coming year.
