Focus on prices of tents, coal with onset of camping time

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 13: Director of the Commercial Control and Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Faisal Al-Ansari revealed an increase in the number of commercial violations uncovered by inspection teams over the past two months compared to the same period last year due to the intensification of field visits and the increased pace of market monitoring. In a press statement after the periodic meeting with inspectors and heads of centers in the department, Al-Ansari disclosed that the Capital Governorate, particularly the Rai Center, recorded the highest percentage of violations due to the intensified campaigns targeting car repair shops and other violating commercial establishments in the area.

Hawally Governorate and Jabriya Center is in second place in terms of the number of violations and the remarkable increase in their occurrence. He affirmed that these efforts are in accordance with the directives of Minister of Commerce and Industry Khalifa Al-Ajeel, and the result of a meeting held at the beginning of September with officials from the monitoring centers, aimed at controlling commercial violations and protecting consumers. He said the monthly monitoring and evaluation of the campaign results will continue. Regarding preparations for the winter season, Al-Ansari indicated that the department is currently focusing on monitoring goods and products related to camping like tents, heating materials and coal. He stated that inspection teams will intensify their presence in tent markets to uncover violations, such as commercial fraud or misrepresentation of the country of origin or the components of the materials used in manufacturing. He added that the monitoring teams will follow up other winter product outlets to verify prices, weights and specifications, and to record violations related to price gouging or commercial fraud. He said the ministry remains committed to protecting consumers and responding promptly to complaints.

As the camping season is starting on Saturday, attention is turning to the tent market, which is witnessing a surge in activity with the display and sale of various types of tents in different sizes, colors and styles, reports Al-Rai daily The daily toured the tent market and met with vendor Arshad, who confirmed that the market is better in its current location, but traffic congestion hinders access. He affirmed that various types of tents are available and some are available upon request. He revealed that “Pakistan is the main source of the tents on offer, as it is considered the leading country in the tailoring and manufacturing of all kinds of tents. The Pakistani fabric used in this industry is known for having two main types: traditional Pakistani fabric and ‘Subh’ fabric, which is considered the best in terms of quality, durability and thermal insulation, although its price is almost double that of regular Pakistani tents.” Another vendor, Abdullah Bu Ali, stated that “the market is witnessing a high demand for Bedouin tents imported from Saudi Arabia, which are popular among both the elderly and the young.

They are available in various sizes, a 17-meter tent costs around KD500, while regular sizes range in price from KD150 to KD300.” He said “many prefer Bedouin tents due to their significance among Arabs, while modern ones offer added safety features, such as leak resistance and durability, keeping out drafts during cold weather.” The tent market is currently located on the site of the old Capital Slaughterhouse, behind Shuwaikh Industrial Area Police Station on the Fourth Ring Road. It is open daily from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. Kuwait Municipality distributed 67 plots to the owners of the old market through a public lottery. During the visit of the daily to the market, visitors and shop owners complained that there is only one entrance and exit gate, facing Al-Ghazali Street. This causes significant congestion, especially given the ongoing road works that are hindering access to the market. They also complained about the lack of restrooms, which have been under renovation since the market was designated for selling tents. The daily conveyed this complaint to the relevant authorities. Nawaf Al- Kandari, Director of the Farwaniya Governorate Municipality branch, said he will contact the projects committee responsible for the market to expedite the completion of the restroom renovations. He also promised to contact the Traffic Engineering Department to look into the possibility of opening another gate to alleviate congestion and facilitate access to the market.
