Dr Al-Refai opens forum for nose, ear, throat surgeries

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 28, (KUNA): Performing successfully the first heart transplant surgery in Kuwait is the fruit of the support and directives of His Highness the Amir for the medical sector, Health Minister Sheikh Dr Basel Al-Sabah said on Wednesday.

The minister made the press statement on the occasion of the congratulatory cable sent by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to the minister on the success of the operation. His Highness the Amir lauded this medical achievement and also acknowledged the meticulous efforts of the entire surgical team, the statement added.

The minister said His Highness the Amir’s congratulation is an honor for the ministry for this historic accomplishment of its kind took place in the country’s medical sector. The minister highly valued the generous congratulations of His Highness the Amir to the ministry and its supervisors, as well as the medical team supervising the operation.

His Highness the Amir’s congratulation will be a momentum for the ministry to make further successes, the minister noted. He promised His Highness the Amir to continue making progress in line with his directives and support.

The minister also vowed His Highness the Amir to do his best to raise the country’s position in the healthcare field. Dr Sheikh Basel announced on Tuesday the first heart transplant surgery in Kuwait at Adan Hospital. He added the surgery was performed on a 20-year-old patient who was suffering from serious heart ailment.

The organ was transplanted from a female donor, who donated her liver, heart and kidneys after her death to save the lives of four young people. The surgery was performed by physicians Riyadh Tarazi, Mohammad Shamsah, Mohammad Al-Banna, Khaldoun Al- Hamoud and Mohammad Badawi.

Meanwhile, Assistant Undersecretary for Allied Medical Services at Ministry of Health Dr Fawaz Al-Refai inaugurated the 42nd edition of Kuwait forum for nose, ear and throat surgeries on behalf of the Minister of Health.

In a statement issued on the sidelines of the forum, Al-Refai disclosed that 8 liver transplant surgeries have been performed in Kuwait within one year at the Jaber and Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospitals respectively. He revealed the ministry’s plan to perform other transplant surgeries for pancreas and lungs, praising the team of doctors who successfully carried out the first heart transplant operation in Kuwait, stressing they deserve commendation.

Al-Refai reiterated the forum was organized in partnership with Austrian Society for Nose, Ear and Throat Surgeries, Kuwait Surgeons Society, and Kuwait Society for Sleep Disorder.
