Fireworks explosion during religious procession in Mexico kills one, injures 10

MEXICO CITY, Sept 26 : A fireworks explosion during a religious procession in San Francisco Tepojaco, Cuautitlan Izcalli, in Mexico’s State of Mexico, killed one person and injured at least 10 others on Thursday, September 24.

The blast occurred when pyrotechnics being transported in a private vehicle detonated near Aldama and Emiliano Zapata streets in the Barrio Las Manzanas area. The explosion set the vehicle on fire and prompted emergency calls.

Municipal police, the State of Mexico Secretariat of Security, the Red Cross and local firefighters responded to the scene, with emergency teams from neighboring Tultitlan, Tepotzotlan and Nicolas Romero also assisting.

Seven patients were transferred to Lomas Verdes Hospital in Naucalpan. One victim died after arriving at the hospital, while six others remained hospitalized with burn injuries.

Authorities initially reported 10 injured people, including eight minors and two adults — six females and four males.

Emergency responders provided first aid to victims suffering serious burns before transporting them to medical facilities. Cuautitlan Izcalli Civil Protection and Firefighters said a 42-year-old woman who suffered multiple burns was among those taken to IMSS Lomas Verdes Hospital for specialized treatment.

Local authorities urged the public not to spread unverified information while the cause of the explosion remains under investigation.

The blast was the third major pyrotechnic accident reported in the State of Mexico in September. A September 5 explosion in Temascalcingo killed 10 people, while a September 15 blast in Aculco injured five.
