KUWAIT CITY, Jan 31: Fathi Kamil, famously known as “The Dark Knight”, the former star of Kuwait’s national team and Al-Tadamon Club, passed away yesterday, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Kuwaiti football.

Celebrated for his exceptional talent, technical mastery, and dazzling dribbling—so remarkable he was once likened to Brazilian stars—Kamil was equally respected for his sportsmanship, commitment, and generosity.

A member of Kuwait’s golden generation, Kamil helped etch the nation’s name on Gulf, Arab, continental, and international stages. He was part of the squad that qualified for the 1982 FIFA World Cup, Kuwait’s only appearance at a World Cup to date, cementing his place in football history.

Born in 1955, Kamil played for Al-Tadamon, the national team, and the military team. Among his many achievements, he was the Amir Cup top scorer in 1973–1974, Asia’s top scorer in 1976, and won the 1980 AFC Asian Cup with Kuwait. He also competed in the 1980 Summer Olympics and participated in several Gulf Cup tournaments, including 1974 and 1979.

The staff of Al-Seyassah newspaper, deeply saddened by his passing, extends heartfelt condolences to his family, praying that Allah grants him mercy and blesses his loved ones with patience and solace.

Minister of Information and Culture and Minister of State for Youth Affairs, Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi, expressed his heartfelt condolences on the death of Fathi Kamil, a former star of Kuwait’s national team and Al-Tadamon Club. He described Kamil as one of Kuwait’s football legends, whose dedication and commitment both on and off the field left a lasting mark on the country’s sports history. Al-Mutairi prayed for Allah’s mercy on the late player and for patience and solace for his family, loved ones, and fans.

Numerous sporting institutions and organizations in Kuwait also issued tributes to “The Dark Knight”, reflecting the high regard in which he was held both nationally and internationally.
