BAGHDAD: A widely circulated video showing Iraqi passengers aboard a passenger aircraft has been misleadingly presented on social media as footage linked to Iraqi airspace or an Iraqi aircraft.
The Iraqi Ministry of Transport clarified Tuesday that the video is not connected to Iraqi airspace and does not show an Iraqi Airways aircraft, indicating that the footage is likely old and has recently been recirculated.
Ministry spokesperson Hussein Ahmed told Shafaq News Agency that the video shows an Iranian aircraft operating a domestic flight within Iran.
“The video is from a domestic flight within the Islamic Republic of Iran. The plane was Iranian, and the flight was domestic, likely between two airports within Iran, such as Mashhad and Tehran,” Ahmed said.
He explained that the presence of Iraqi passengers on board may have contributed to the video's widespread circulation and the impression that the aircraft was traveling to or from Iraq.
Ahmed stressed that the aircraft was not flying in Iraqi airspace and did not belong to Iraqi Airways.
The ministry also said there is information indicating that the video is old and has recently been republished and widely circulated. However, officials have not been able to establish the exact date or location in which the footage was originally recorded.
As a result, claims presenting the video as recent footage of an aircraft operating in Iraqi airspace are unverified and misleading.
