The UNDP pointed out that public procurement is no longer limited to the purchase of goods and services, as it has become a strategic tool for achieving sustainable economic, social and environmental value. Participants in the dialogue held in partnership with the Secretariat General of the Supreme Council for Planning and Development reviewed international experiences in employing public procurement in a more strategic manner. Discussions focused on the mechanisms to raise the efficiency of government expenditure, promote innovation, support local markets, and achieve the best long-term value for public funds.
The introductory session, organized by the UNDP in collaboration with the American Chamber of Commerce in Kuwait, witnessed broad participation among representatives of private sector companies. The session tackled global developments in sustainable public procurement and how companies can prepare to meet new requirements, boost their competitiveness, and capitalize on future procurement opportunities. UNDP Resident Representative in Kuwait Emma Morley stated that public procurement is no longer about what governments buy, but rather about the value that public spending delivers. She explained that every procurement decision is an opportunity to achieve better outcomes for the society, economy and the environment. She added that through its partnership with the Secretariat General of the Supreme Council for Planning and Development, the UNDP is supporting Kuwait in exploring how sustainable public procurement can contribute to achieving the Kuwait Vision 2035, ensuring that every Kuwaiti dinar of public expenditure provides sustainable value for current and future generations.
