Explosion at Qatar Gas Plant Leaves 54 Injured, 18 Missing

DOHA, Jun 22: At least 54 people were injured and 18 others remained missing after an explosion at Qatar’s main liquefied natural gas processing hub in Ras Laffan, authorities said Sunday.

The blast occurred Sunday evening during the start-up of operations at the Barzan local gas supply facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City , according to a statement from QatarEnergy .

The state-owned energy company said the explosion sparked a fire, prompting emergency response teams to deploy to the site. The fire has since been brought under control, it added.

Qatar’s Interior Ministry described the incident as a “technical accident” and said there was no gas leak posing a threat to public safety.

Search operations are continuing for the 18 missing people. The ministry said the Qatari International Search and Rescue Group was working alongside civil defence teams at the site.

QatarEnergy did not immediately confirm whether the explosion caused significant damage to the Barzan facility, which supplies gas to Qatar’s domestic market.

An eyewitness reported hearing a loud explosion from Doha, south of the Ras Laffan complex.

Authorities said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.
