BRUSSELS, May 24: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday that any prospective agreement between the United States and Iran must ensure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz with full, toll-free freedom of navigation for international shipping.
In a post on X, von der Leyen welcomed recent progress in diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran, stressing that a durable agreement must restore stability in the strategically vital waterway.
“We need a deal that truly de-escalates the conflict, reopens the Strait of Hormuz and guarantees toll free full freedom of navigation,” she said, adding that Iran must not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.
She further called on Tehran to end what she described as destabilizing activities in the region, including actions carried out directly or through allied groups, as well as repeated attacks on neighboring states.
Von der Leyen also said the European Union would continue working with international partners to achieve a long-term diplomatic settlement, while seeking to limit broader economic spillovers from the conflict, particularly on global supply chains and energy prices.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, with a significant portion of global oil and gas shipments passing through the narrow passage daily, making its security a key focus of international diplomacy amid ongoing regional tensions.
