EU to Impose Freedom of Navigation Sanctions on Iran for First Time

BRUSSELS, Jun 8: The European Union will apply “freedom of navigation” sanctions on Iran for the first time, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced on Monday, warning against further escalation in the region.

Speaking ahead of an informal meeting of EU defence ministers, Kallas said the move marks a new step in the bloc’s sanctions approach targeting maritime security concerns linked to Iran.

“It will be the first time that freedom of navigation sanctions will be applied on Iran,” she said, adding that the region does not need further escalation and urging all parties to return to negotiations.

Kallas also noted that EU ministers will discuss additional measures under the bloc’s maritime security mission, Operation ASPIDES, which operates in the region to protect shipping lanes and ensure safe passage through key waterways.

The announcement comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, where concerns over maritime security and regional conflict have increasingly drawn international attention.
