KUWAIT CITY, Jan 6: Ambassador of the European Union to Kuwait, Anne Koistinen, says the European Union considers Kuwait a close and reliable partner. Highlighting the strong trade and investment ties between Kuwait and the Union, she explained that the European Union and its member states are recognized as important partners for Kuwait in several areas, including regional security and stability, infrastructure, clean technologies, women’s empowerment, education, and scientific research. Looking ahead, the Union aims to build an even stronger and more ambitious partnership, focusing on priorities such as advancing green and digital transformations, expanding scientific and technological collaboration, and enhancing educational and cultural programs. In a press statement marking the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Kuwait and the European Union, Koistinen highlighted the ongoing cooperation, saying, “We are working together to strengthen connectivity between Europe and the GCC region, as well as support regional stability. By benefiting from the shared experiences, resources, and values, we strive to find innovative solutions that serve our societies and contribute to global prosperity.” The European Union and Kuwait are set to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026, marking four decades since formal ties were established in 1986. This milestone represents a significant development in their partnership.

However, the relationship between Europe and Kuwait stretches back centuries, built on connections through trade, culture, and shared interests, which have fostered a strong and lasting bond. The robust partnership between Kuwait, the European Union, and its member states is based on shared values, mutual respect, and decades of cooperation. The enduring partnership between the European Union and Kuwait, spanning four decades, reflects shared achievements in various sectors, including political dialogue, economic cooperation, people-topeople exchanges, the green transition, and digitalization. The 40th anniversary celebration marks more than just a milestone. It represents the culmination of this strong and lasting relationship and highlights the Union’s and Kuwait’s commitment to collaboratively addressing regional and global challenges.

Looking ahead, the occasion reaffirms a shared vision for a future characterized by sustained cooperation, innovation, and mutual prosperity. To solidify this vision, the European Union proposed in July 2025 to begin negotiations with Kuwait on a Strategic Partnership Agreement. The agreement is intended to create a comprehensive and ambitious framework that reflects shared priorities and a long-term vision for cooperation in important areas of mutual interest. The European Union is committed to deepening its relationship with Kuwait. This close partnership aims to promote sustainable growth, foster dialogue and innovation, and continue delivering tangible benefits to the people of both regions for years to come. To commemorate this significant milestone, the Union plans to host a series of events and activities throughout the year.
