‘Cleaning works underway in previous tyres site’
KUWAIT CITY, Aug 19: After five years of governmental work, the Environment Public Authority (EPA) has finally completed the relocation of more than 20 million tyres that have accumulated since 2004 in Arhiya, which is located between plots allotted for South Saad Al-Abdullah housing project and considered a major obstacle to the implementation of the project, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting sources. In November 2020, EPA was officially commissioned to transfer the tyres to the alternative site in Salmi.
At the time, EPA promised to the National Assembly members and citizens that it would address the issue within eight months and it has fulfilled its promise, sources disclosed. Sources confirmed that cleaning works are underway in the previous tyres site in preparation for handing it over completely before the end of this month as per the agreement between EPA, other government agencies and the Assembly. Sources said EPA granted interested Kuwaitis a mechanism for transporting tyres from Arhiya to Salmi, so the relocation of the tyres did not cost the State anything; while these Kuwaitis will be provided with facilities for the recycling of the tyres. Sources added EPA is also expected to transfer tyres which piled up near the recycling plant in Salmi to the alternative sites to be under the protection of specialized agencies to prevent fire and other untoward incid
