Kuwaiti Environmental Team tracks the migration of ‘Yeshiti’ falcons from Russia.

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 29, (Agencies): Rashid Al-Hajji, the head of the Kuwaiti Environmental Team, stated on Sunday that the large falcons, known as “Yeshiti,” are returning to Kuwait from Russia. This marks their fifth visit to Kuwait since 2019, with their fourth return from the exact location.

Al-Hajji explained that the “Yeshiti” falcons usually arrive in Kuwait in October and stay for about a month before returning to Russia. They follow a two-month cycle for each trip, including the time spent in Kuwait and the journey back.

This tracking project began in 2019 and was initiated by the Kuwaiti Environmental Team with financial support from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences. The data from this tracking project is shared with relevant institutions interested in protecting the environment and preserving threatened bird species.

It was emphasized that the project aimed to monitor the “Yeshiti” falcons as they are classified as an endangered species, with a particular focus on their habitat and migration patterns. The project involved deploying 11 tracking devices on these large falcons and 10 devices on smaller birds, such as the Eurasian Turtle Doves.

The Kuwaiti Environmental Team has made significant contributions to this field through voluntary efforts and the support of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences. They have effectively safeguarded the locations where these birds are found.

Furthermore, Al-Hajji mentioned that Kuwait is one of the leading countries in this field due to the cooperative efforts of Kuwaiti volunteers, the support from the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, and the expertise of the General Authority for the Environment. These combined efforts have played a pivotal role in the conservation of these birds.

Each year, the project selects different species of falcons or other bird species for tracking, contributing to ongoing efforts to conserve and protect Kuwait’s environment and its avian inhabitants.
