DUBAI, UAE, Dec 18: In Dubai last night, a 'silent auction' resonated as a powerful symbol of unity as the UAE community rallied together in support of the people of war-torn Gaza. The attendees' generosity was exemplified by a remarkable act: a woman donated Dh17,000 upon entering the venue, far exceeding the required Dh150.
The A1 Space in Alserkal Avenue underwent a transformation into a focal point of solidarity for the children of Palestine during the Wings for Gaza event organized by the non-profit Little Wings Foundation on Sunday. In just one evening, the event successfully raised Dh200,000, earmarked for medical aid and advocacy initiatives to enhance the health and well-being of Gaza's children, particularly those suffering from war-related limb deformities.
Adorned with a Palestinian theme, the event celebrated the vibrant culture and artistry of the region. Attendees, donned in Palestinian headscarves (keffiyeh), wore clothing adorned with messages of support for Gaza. Some contributed their personally crafted items, paintings, and pottery for sale. This collective display of support and compassion underscored the community's profound unity.
Participants engaged in a diverse array of compelling activities, including a silent auction featuring captivating Palestinian art, paintings, an installation, and an authentic Thobe (robe) from Gaza. Attendees enthusiastically placed their bids for these items using their phones.
To join Wings for Gaza, adults made a minimum donation of Dh150, while children enjoyed complimentary entry with a nominal fee of Dh50 for access to the activities. The event attracted a dedicated team of volunteers, including individuals as young as 17, driven by their passion for the Palestinian cause.
Yasma Husseini, a Palestinian high school student and volunteer, explained, "We decided to participate and volunteer because we're passionate about the Palestinian cause; we grew up hearing about it." Likewise, Maryam Khayyat, another Palestinian volunteer, expressed, "It is the least we can do."
The presence of Asil Abdo, a Palestinian resident in the UAE, and her husband Tariq Abu Shaban, an IT professional, exemplified the community's unwavering commitment. When asked about their volunteering, they simply responded, "Why not?" Asil conveyed her gratitude to everyone who attended and supported the event, noting the remarkable turnout and the heartwarming generosity, such as a woman who donated 17k at entry without making a purchase.
The event brought together individuals of diverse nationalities and age groups, united in their support for the people of Gaza. It provided a unique opportunity for attendees to make a tangible difference in the lives of these young individuals.
