LONDON, Oct 12: Sir Elton John has expressed uncertainty about his future, admitting, "I don’t know how much time I have left," as he reflects on mortality in his new documentary. The legendary musician, 77, has faced several health challenges recently, including knee replacements and hip surgery following a fall that forced him to delay his farewell tour in 2021.
In his biopic, Never Too Late, the Rocketman singer contemplates his own mortality, confessing that he often thinks about life and death. In one poignant scene from the film, Elton is shown in the dressing room during his final tour, gazing at his belongings. He reflects, "I wonder what is going to happen to all of this stuff when I finish? This is the latter time of my life. I don't know how much time I have left. You think about that more when you get to my age. You think about life and death. You think, 'Well, I just want to be where I want to be now.'"
He added, "I don't have to work after this. I will work and do records and put radio shows together, but traveling takes so much out of you. It is very tiring. I am used to it; I am a veteran at it, but this is where you start to think about mortality."
Sir Elton's new Disney+ documentary and musical offers a retrospective look at his astonishing life and career spanning fifty years. The film includes never-before-seen footage, such as glimpses of Elton’s handwritten diaries, audio from a landmark Rolling Stone interview, and a memorable performance with John Lennon at Madison Square Garden in 1974.
As he prepares for his final concert in North America at Dodger Stadium, Elton takes viewers back in time, recounting the extraordinary highs and heartbreaking lows of his early years and how he overcame adversity, abuse, and addiction.
Elton turned heads by wearing his old kneecap as a necklace to the premiere of his biopic. Earlier this month, during a screening in New York City, he joked, "To be honest with you, there’s not much of me left. I don’t have tonsils, adenoids, or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate. I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee. In fact, the only thing left to me is my left hip. But I’m still here. And I can’t thank you [enough]; you’re the people that made me."
Elton was proudly supported by his partner, David Furnish, and his godson, Damian Hurley, as they walked the red carpet at The Royal Festival Hall. He shared that his children, Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11, are concerned about his health. "They love their Daddy, so they want me to be around forever," he said. "I want to see them have children, and get married, but I don’t think I am going to be around for that. Who knows? You never know. So that is why I want to make the best of my time while I am around. Our time together is so wonderful and so precious."
On Wednesday night, Sir Elton made a rare public appearance at the Attitude Awards 2024, where he received the Legacy Award. Presented in a room full of showbiz stars at the Roundhouse in Camden, London, the legendary musician admitted the award meant a lot to him and acknowledged it had been a long journey.
After a brief appearance on stage, where he was awarded the accolade by Ed Sheeran, Elton was supported by a chair as he posed for photos with his award. Accepting the honor, he expressed, "I’m very humbled by this award; it means a lot."
Reflecting on his six-decade-long career, he shared, "I’m married to my work; I love music. Music saved me when I was happy; it saved me when I was miserable." He also mentioned that the Elton John Foundation has been a significant focus of his life, providing him with "so much joy and so much pleasure" in helping others. Together with David, who serves as the foundation's CEO, they have raised $600 million for various causes.
Elton became the second person to receive the Legacy Award, following Prince Harry, who was honored in 2017 to mark the 20th anniversary of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales's death.
