Tesla shared a video of its Optimus robot appearing to do yoga.

NEW YORK, Sept 27, (Agencies): Tesla is showcasing its robot’s newfound ability to perform yoga stretches. Elon Musk, on September 25, 2023, GMT+3, shared a video featuring Tesla’s Optimus robot executing yoga poses and efficiently sorting blocks.

The video highlights the robot’s remarkable capability to locate its limbs in space using its visual perception and Tesla’s onboard neural network to carry out tasks. The video text notes that “Optimus can now autonomously calibrate its arms and legs.”

In the footage, the robot adeptly picks up blocks, categorizes them based on their colors, and accurately orients them during the sorting process. The neural network driving its actions is trained end-to-end, with video input translating into precise control outputs.

Tesla initially announced its intention to develop humanoid robots in 2021, with Elon Musk revealing the plan during an event featuring a dancer dressed as a robot. Musk has expressed his vision for these robots to find applications in factories or serve as human companions and butlers, emphasizing their potential to revolutionize the economy by making physical labor optional.

The latest video suggests that Optimus has made progress in terms of balance, as it is seen performing a yoga pose on one leg.

Jim Fan, a senior AI scientist at Stanford University, expressed genuine admiration for the robot’s hardware quality, foreseeing Optimus’s five-fingered hands as superior for everyday tasks compared to competitors like Boston Dynamics’ Atlas, which lacks human-like fingers. Fan praised the fluidity of the robot’s movements and its impressive aesthetics.

Less than a year ago, during the second annual Tesla AI Day event, the Optimus robot struggled to walk, with some prototypes requiring assistance to even make it onto the stage. This performance led experts to believe that Tesla’s robot was lagging behind competitors like Boston Dynamics.

However, Musk stated during the 2022 event that it marked the first time the prototype had walked independently, emphasizing that the robot had capabilities beyond what was demonstrated and that they were cautious to avoid any mishaps on stage.
