Eleven sign … 6 withdraw from poll

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 6: Eleven citizens, including a woman, on Tuesday filed their candidacies for the parliamentary elections; increasing the total number of candidates to 350 on the ninth day of the registration period, while six candidates decided to withdraw from the electoral race. Two candidates registered in the First Constituency – Hamad Rouhaldeen and Fatima Fadhel Al-Saffar. So far, the number of candidates in this constituency has reached 48 and one of them has withdrawn from the race. Two candidates registered in the Second Constituency – Abdulaziz Faisal Al-Bazzali and Muhammad Barrak Al-Mutair. The number of candidates in this constituency has reached 60 and one of them has withdrawn.

Three candidates registered in the Third Constituency – Ahmed Jassem Al-Saffar, Hassan Husain Hassan and Raghian Bahej Al-Normas. The number of candidates in this constituency has reached 54. Two candidates registered in the Fourth Constituency – Musaed Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi and Yousef Ali Al- Qattan. The number of candidates in this constituency has reached 93 and three of them have withdrawn. Two candidates registered in the Fifth Constituency – Muhammad Sultan Al-Mutairi and Muhammad Hadi Al- Harbi. The number of candidates in this constituency has reached 97 and one of them has withdrawn.

The last day of registration for candidates is on Wednesday, while the parliamentary elections will be held on Sept 29. Meanwhile, former MP and Second Constituency candidate Muhammad Al-Mutair told the press that the National Assembly speaker post is not a goal in itself, as it is a tool for parliamentary achievements. He believes there will be a pro-reform speaker if the required number of pro-reform candidates emerge victorious in the upcoming elections. First Constituency candidate Fatima Al-Saffar said she has no intention to prioritize women’s issues if she wins a parliamentary seat. She thinks Kuwaiti women have already obtained all their rights, so she will focus on the housing issue. On the other hand, the Ministry of Information has referred 38 media entities to the Public Prosecution for violating regulations for covering the parliamentary elections.
