LOUISIANA, April 20: A 31-year-old Army veteran and delivery worker killed eight children, including seven believed to be his own in a series of shootings across multiple locations in Shreveport early Sunday, before being shot dead by police following a chase.
Authorities identified the gunman as Shamar Elkins, who carried out the attacks shortly after 6 a.m. at three separate addresses. The victims, aged between 3 and 11, included siblings and one cousin, according to the Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office. Officials said the ages of the children drew audible shock during a press briefing.
Elkins also shot two women, his wife and another woman with whom he had children, both in the head. They remain in critical condition in the hospital.
Law enforcement pursued Elkins as he fled the scene, ultimately shooting him dead after he crossed into Bossier City. The investigation is being led by the Louisiana State Police due to the multi-jurisdictional nature of the crime.
In a disturbing detail, Elkins had posted a photo on social media just hours before the killings, showing himself with one of his daughters during an outing. Earlier posts also depicted him with several children at a church service, describing them as “all my kids.”
However, reports indicate he had been struggling with mental health issues. In recent messages and a phone call to family members, he spoke about “dark thoughts,” depression, and personal turmoil, including a potential divorce. Family members said he expressed a sense of hopelessness in the days leading up to the attack.
Elkins had previously served with the Louisiana Army National Guard from 2013 to 2020 and later worked for a delivery company. Records also show a prior 2019 arrest related to illegal use of a weapon, for which he pleaded guilty and received probation.
Officials and political leaders expressed shock and grief over the tragedy. Jeff Landry said the state is praying for the victims and praised first responders for their swift action. Mike Johnson, a native of Shreveport, described the incident as a “heartbreaking tragedy” and said his office is coordinating with local authorities.
The killings have sent shockwaves across the community, with authorities continuing to piece together the full circumstances behind one of the deadliest family-related mass shootings in recent U.S. history.
